“ すごく組織的に収納されているのでないかぎり、ものでいっぱいの家にいると、時としてものすごい憂鬱の材料になりうる。ものにふさがれた部屋では気もふさぐ。その理由の１つは、あたりまえだが、ものでいっぱいだと、人間のためのスペースが少なくなるからだ。問題はもっとある。私の思うに、人は周囲のメンタルモデルを作るために、絶えず自分の環境をスキャンしている。状況の解釈が難しくなるほど、意識的思考のためのエネルギーは奪われる。がらくたにふさがれた部屋では、文字通り心も身体もふさがれるのだ。
